A carpenter uses a set of house plans to build a house. If he didn't the bathroom might get overlooked altogether.

Rocket Scientists would never begin construction on a new booster rocket without a detailed set of design specifications. Yet most of us go blindly out into the world without an inkling of an idea about finances and without any plan at all.

Many people in the west are over their heads in debt, facing foreclosure or other financial maladies. Could some of this possibly have been avoided with proper budgeting of our finances?

Personal budgeting is crucial, if we have financial goals in life we would like to achieve. This includes most of us. We want nice homes, cars, vacation, education for our children and other necessities and luxuries. We would like to attain our financial goals without losing our shirts or become deeply indebted. First, set a lose financial plan, then zero in and refine it for every area of your financial life.

A budget should never be a financial starvation diet. That won't work for the long haul. Make reasonable allocations for food, clothing, shelter, utilities and insurance and set aside a reasonable amount for entertainment and the occasional luxury item. Savings should always come first before any spending.

Even a small amount saved will help you reach your long and short term financial goals. You can find many budget forms on the internet. Just use any search engine you choose and type in free budget forms.

Budgeting can seem overwhelming, but as you have read above it really doesn't have to be. If you don't have time or the inclination to do it out yourself, hire that financial planner to help you with it. What is important is that you get it done, and stick to it so that you meet both your short and long term goals.
