Plastic surgery is a huge part of today's media culture. Found in every corner of the media, from magazines, to the nightly news, to the seemingly hundreds of cable television shows dedicated to plastic surgery it's everywhere. The biggest topic of all these shows seems to be liposuction.

Liposuction is a technical term coming from the word suction, easy to figure out, and the prefix lipo-, which comes from lipid, Latin for fat. It is sucking fat. Liposuction is a procedure that is done by a plastic surgeon, usually under general anesthesia, in a hospital or possibly in a surgery center.

The standard surgery itself is gruesome, although not scarring to the individual who receives the surgery. Small cuts are made in the skin of the area where the fat is to be removed. Cannulas, the instruments that will suck out the fat are inserted, as are injections of saline and anesthetic solutions.

The cannula is worked around in the fat layer under the skin. This dislodges some of the fat cells, which are then sucked up with the cannula and removed from the body. This can result in up to about 10 pounds of weight (fat) being lost, but no more. Liposuction is not about losing weight.

Other types of liposuction are being developed right now, including laser assisted liposuction - and they are already in use in some places throughout the United States. For now, patients are just bandaged up very tightly and sent home, hoping that dents and rippling won't occur as side effects.

Some think that liposuction is an alternative to programs for weight loss such as diet, or even exercise, but it is not. A good plastic surgeon will not work on a patient who has not lost their weight and gotten to near their goal weight before seeking liposuction. It is just a final touch for those who need it.

Women generally get their liposuction performed on their bellies (abdomens) and thigh areas, while men opt for their abdomens and flank areas. It is not unheard of for many other areas to have liposuction, however. Liposuction can't get rid of extra skin, though, this will require other operations.

You can be turned away for liposuction by your plastic surgeon for several reasons. Unrealistic expectations, being a smoker, or being under the age of 18 will disqualify you from being able to have liposuction, as will illnesses like diabetes. Your doctor will tell you if you don't make the cut.

Liposuction is not an easy way to lose weight - there are no easy ways. Instead, it is a way to finish off areas that just won't lose the fat no matter how hard you try with diet and exercise. Don't expect miracles from this surgery, and don't expect to receive liposuction if you haven't tried to diet.
