If you have a restaurant or you are considering opening one up, there are several issues to take care of. One of them will be the decision to serve alcohol or not. This is a touchy subject though and one that requires a great deal of consideration. First, you need to find out if you can even serve alcohol in that location. This can be determined by your city ordinances.
There are some pros and cons to serving alcohol at your restaurant that you need to be aware of. For example some families enjoy restaurants where the adults can get wine or beer with their dinner. It will encourage them to bring in the entire family and that means more money in your pocket. Others though avoid such establishments with their children so you could be driving some people away.
If you want to do so, you will need to find out how to go about getting a liquor license. This can take some time to complete do make sure you work on it early. You don't want to end up not having it when you open as it can be embarrassing. It can also give the impression that you aren't taking your restaurant business seriously.
If you decide to set up your restaurant with a bar area, be prepared for some money to be involved. There are glasses, accessories for the drinks, and of course the alcohol itself you need to have available. You are also going to need to hire excellent bartenders who know how to make an array of popular drinks.
You will want to serve for a supplier of the alcohol that offers you a very good deal too. This way you can always have the alcohol you need on hand. You also want to be able to sell it for much more than you paid for it. That way you can justify the hassle of having to provide such services at your restaurant.
It is important that you understand the laws relating to alcohol in your area. You also need to always comply with them. Underage servers can take orders for alcohol but they can't deliver it to the table. They can remove empty glasses but not those that have alcohol remaining in them. You will need to make sure you have other staff members available that can deliver drinks for this reason.
You also need to make sure all of your guests who order alcohol are old enough to drink. Your staff needs to realize that serving under age individuals can result in serious problems for your business. Therefore each person should be asked for a photo ID regardless of how old they appear to be.
As you can see there are certainly several pros and cons of serving alcohol at your restaurant. You will need to decide which of them pertain to your own personal needs. You also want to decide what type of atmosphere you wish to display at your restaurant. If you decide you do want to serve alcohol then you need to make sure you are responsible about it and don't cut corners that can turn into big issues for you.
