There I was on the deck doing sit-up with my toes locked under the metal bar on the weight machine with my hands crossed over my chest. I could feel the burn in my abdominals, but my back was crying out with pain. In our guest bedroom we do have one of those ab chairs that you sit in and do sit-ups. We have all the equipment here to get in shape, but it just wasn't happening.
I was looking for a secret, some way to easily improve my abs and at the same time not have the back pain. Even at the gym, the personal trainers never seemed to have a set opinion on what to eat, exercise to do, a routine. In my quest for the owners manual to my body, I had to figure this part out or I was doomed to continual battle of the bulge.
For you, it may not be the belly. Maybe you have fat around your hips, your arms, your face. I know many have a good half inch of fat on their backs. This is all important to get off the body so the body doesn't have to continually feed that. Once the body is in shape, it can repair itself more quickly and you are in health.
Food plays such a big part and if you want to turn me off at this point, you can - but it does mean a lot in any diet to burn fat. The reason is because there are actually foods that burn more fat than they put on the body. It's true - you can find these fat burning foods and work them into your diet slowly. As you do, they will be more enjoyable and you will eat this way long term.
Next, you want to find a way that works those areas of your body with fat without breaking your back, in my case - or straining any other area. And the way to do this is to use a strategy I found called static contraction. This is putting stress on a muscle group one time and holding it to what they call -failure-. But for you and me, that means instead of doing 25 sit-ups, do just one, but hold it for 15 to 30 seconds, or until you can no longer.
The body reacts to this quickly thinking that it needs to provide more muscle and burn body fat quickly. With more repetitions, each time you exercise, your body will sense that it needs to build up in that area. Now if the belly isn't your problem, you can work on your back or thighs, or whatever area, simply by eating right and hold those muscles in that area for one contraction.
With the muscle contraction and the fat burning foods you are on your way to successfully burning body fat quickly and the healthy way. This is a natural function of the body which burns fat before muscle and if it knows muscle is needed, will not let muscle be lost in the meantime. But watch what you eat - don't sabotage this system by pigging out on your old favorites. It won't work and you'll need to get back on the wagon. And there's one tip that will help you keep going long term.
Finally, get yourself into a plan. I recommend that people find a good program that they can do over the computer and figure out just how to go through the week with a good support system. Many programs out there offer this and will get you on track for success. They are affordable and the people that put them together will help you every step of the way, so rely on them as well.
