Although caused for different reasons, diabetes symptoms look much the same whether the problem is of the type 1 or type 2 variety. The cells that produce insulin are destroyed in type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the cells become insulin resistant. When either of these occur, there is an overabundance of glucose in the blood and way too little of it in the cells. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes.

Diabetes Symptoms

An excessive production of urine and being thirsty all the time is usually the first problem that is seen. When someone has diabetes, the kidneys cannot filter the high amount of glucose they receive so they take water from the blood to dilute it. Because of this, the bladder gets full faster and the lack of water in the blood causes thirst.

A person who develops type 1 diabetes will often drop a large amount of weight in a ridiculously short period without being on a diet. The cells don't get the glucose they need and your body reacts by breaking down fat and muscle tissue for energy. The loss of weight is not as noticeable with the second type. Type 2 comes on over a longer time-span so any loss of weight is not as obvious as it is with type 1.

Both types of diabetes cause fatigue and weakness. This again is caused by a problem in the cells. When cells do not get enough of the glucose they need, they lack energy. What happens in the cells happens to the entire person. This overwhelming fatigue.

Feeling a tingling or numbness in the hands, feet, arms and legs is another symptom. The problem is caused by neuropathy, or damage to the nervous system. When a person has type 2 diabetes, this comes on more slowly and so may not be noticed until much damage is already done. When it is caught in a timely manner, neuropathy can often be reversed. Genetics is the main cause of type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is often genetically caused but the major reason for it is obesity. Anyone who suffers from these symptoms should have their blood sugar checked immediately.
