Gout is recognized as one of the leading causes of painful, disabling, chronic arthritis. Gout is a disorder of uric-acid metabolism, and is just one of over 150 different diseases referred to as arthritis (any condition which causes inflammation, pain and swelling in and around the joints). Your GP may therefore be unable to make a firm diagnosis straight away, and you may have to be referred for further tests.
Gout is a form of arthritis that produces intense bursts of joint pain and affects millions of people, with men being the most susceptible.
Many people have the impression that the curse of gout is an entirely self-inflicted condition suffered by glutton and over indulgence, just like royals and the aristocracy of old, this however is is not the whole story as we now know.
Gout is characterized by excruciating, sudden, unexpected, burning pain, as well as swelling, redness, warmth, and stiffness in the affected joint. This occurs commonly in men in their toes, especially the big toe, but can appear in other parts of the body and affects women as well.
Gout is though to be more severe if the symptoms start before or around the age of 30. Diabetics and kidney problems can make the condition worse.
Gout, like most arthritic conditions is chronic (on going), the condition is a result of a metabolic disorder, excessive amounts of uric acid leave crystal like deposits in the joint area.
Research indicates that as many as 1 in every 100 adults may develop gout. If the condition is left untreated it may lead to joint deformity and can even effect the kidneys.
Can Gout be Cured
Many would describe gout as an incurable disease, as they would with most diseases associated with arthritis, and this may be true if taken literally, however if we treat the underlying issues contributing to gout, then all symptoms of gout can be irradiated. There are medical, dietary, alternative, and lifestyle approaches to treating gout (or the underlying contributing factors of gout).
Why risk using harmful drug therapies, when gout may indeed be successfully treated using a combination of simple lifestyle changes. Simple changes to diet will defiantly help, in fact, Using a couple of everyday items you may already have in your kitchen can successfully remove uric acid crystal deposits from one's joints when taken in the right combination. One can successfully treat one's own gout, if they find the right alternative approach, even if gout has been passed down through a family gene.
