I have talked to and treated thousands of people suffering from back pain over many years and had many of them question me about the value of back pain stretches. My answer to that is the fairly standard: if you do it correctly you can expect positive outcomes and when you do it incorrectly you can expect failure, in fact it is dangerous to continue doing so.

There are three basic spinal movements that we should be aware of: Rotation, Flexion (side bending), Extension (forward/backward movement).

Only once all 3 movements have been restored can one expect to see success. There are important techniques to learn that will enable you to re-establish those movements successfully.

Positive results can never be expected from partially correcting the functions. The biggest issue with most of the current remedies are that they do not deal with the 3 necessary elements; Symmetry, Elasticity and Strength.

The correct routine will consequently tackle the 3 crucial movements in harmony. You will not achieve the desired outcome by just doing exercises and no stretches or visa versa. Think about it for a moment if you stop doing exercises your muscles become weak by the same token if you stop stretching your muscles loose its elasticity and symmetry.

It is regrettable that too many back pain sufferers do not achieve success because of the fact that they neglect to do exercises and stretches opting for only one of them. It is therefore very important to understand the difference between exercises and stretching.

Fundamentally, exercise shortens the muscle fibre, so when back pain victims exercise without doing efficient back pain stretches failure is predictable. On the other hand stretching does lengthen muscle fibres. So if follows logically then that doing only stretches failure will also be inevitable.

As a result it is vital to do exercises and stretches correctly and in the right sequence and frequency to guarantee success.
