There are many people today who still believe that only men can suffer from hair loss. Yet research has now shown that one in four women are also likely to suffer from some form of hair loss at some point during their lives. Below we will take a look at the three most common reasons as to what causes hair loss in women around the world today.
1. Female Pattern Baldness - Although you may not believe this but the most common hair loss complaint in women is the same one that men suffer from. Just like men, these women suffer from Androgenetic Alopecia which results from their body reacting adversely to male hormones found in their bodies.
Women, just like men, have the hormone testosterone in their bodies (but not at the same levels normally). However sometimes this hormone will convert into DHT, which then affects the way hair grows normally. In most cases, female pattern baldness is not as extreme as it is in men and will often occur much later in life, but it is still the same as the condition in men (male pattern baldness).
2. Telogen Effluvium - This is the second most common cause of hair loss in women today and is somewhat different in the way that it manifests itself. With this condition rather than losing large amounts of hair a woman will start to see a thinning of the hair which means that not enough is growing back to cover all areas of the scalp.
In a large number of cases where women suffer from this particular hair loss condition, it is because they have suffered some kind of traumatic event in their lives. This will usually have placed considerable stress on their body, which has prevented hair from growing normally. Women who become pregnant may often be shocked to notice that their hair begins to thin after child birth. Once things start to settle down, it can normally be expected that hair growth will resume as normal.
3. Alopecia Areata - This is now the third most common kind of hair loss problem women can suffer from. You will find that where the above two kinds will be localized to a particular area of a woman's scalp; this type will cause hair loss to various different parts of the scalp. So hair loss is often somewhat patchy and can look very unsightly.
This particular type of hair loss in women is thought to be caused because a woman's immune system is not functioning correctly. In many cases, the hair will regrow after the immune system has had time to replenish itself, but for some women the problem can be a lot more severe and be with them for a long time to come.
Hopefully by understanding what causes hair loss in women you should be better able to judge whether you are suffering from such a problem or not. With this in mind you should take steps to prevent hair loss and to re grow your hair.
