What exactly are dust mites? Are they harmful to my health? My doctor said I might be allergic to dust mites what does this mean? Many questions are asked about dust mites, but many are left unanswered. Hopefully in this article I will be able to shed some light on this fairly mysterious topic.
What Are Dust Mites? Many people know dust mites exist but know very little about them. Dust mites are living organisms that feed, breathe and defecate just like any other animal. They are actually from the spider family and have eight legs just like a spider. They live on average for about 30 days for a male and 2 months for an impregnated female whom lays around 100 eggs during its entire lifespan.
How Big are They? Dust Mites are extremely small in fact you need a microscope or very strong magnifying glass in order to see one. They are about half a millimeter big.
What is the Amount of Dust Mites That Live Within My House? It is impossible to come up within exact amount of dust mites that are found within your house, but it is known that in the average mattress millions of dust mites take residence. Dust mites thrive in your pillows, sheets, comforters, carpeting, couches, and chairs.
For What Reason Do Dust Mites Live in My Bed, Couch, etc.? Dust mites find humid places within your house favorable so any place where you sweat, drool, or even breathe creates optimal living conditions for dust mites. Dust mites also find places such as deep within the fibers of your couch or carpet a great place to live, because it is away from sunlight and the dust mites are protected from vacuums.
They Like Humidity But What Do They Like To Eat? You. Dust mites eat the dead skin humans shed daily. A days worth of shedded skin is enough for hundreds of thousands of dust mites. This is also why they enjoy living in the places mentioned earlier, because these are some of the most common places that a person sheds skin.
Wouldn't it be Smarter to Call Them Skin Mites Instead of Dust Mites? Dust in mostly composed of dead skin. The dust found within your house, in places such as the TV, or in the air is actually dead skin. Because a majority of dust is comprised of the dead skin dust mites feed on, dust mites are called "dust" mites.
Many people know little to nothing about dust mites, but hopefully upon reading this you now know a little more than before about the creeping crawling dust mites.
