This STD which is otherwise known as inguinal granuloma is a bacterial disease that is rampant in third world countries. Generally, these countries have inadequate medical treatment, so that the disease goes untreated and sometimes just disappears. Sores develop around the genital area, which could sometimes be mistaken for syphilis. At the final stages of the infection, blood and mucus will ensue from the wound, which is set off by the destruction of external and internal tissue. Because it is an open wound, it can be extremely susceptible to other infections.
Granuloma inguinal or donovanosis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacteria Calymmatobacterium or Klebsiella granulomatis. Donovanosis is named after its researcher, Donovan who discovered the Donovan bodies referring to the lesions that contain the bacteria. The occurrence of Donovan bodies is an indication of being infected with Donovanosis.
The causative agent of this disease is a bacterium shaped like a hood or a veil located inside the wounds.
The symptoms of this disease do not emerge immediately after a person is exposed to the bacterium. They can develop since the tenth to the fortieth day, through painless nodules. After a few days, the nodules can burst leading to open lesions. The lesions are fleshy and oozing. The infection does not cover an isolated area, but it can spread, destroying the tissue, which is infected. The regions, which can be affected, are the perenial one, the labia, or the penis shaft. Sometimes, the lesions can be located on the cervix or the vaginal wall.
The bacterium can be transmitted through direct contact between the open lesions and any type of intercourse can be risky if one of the partners is infected.
The moment you believe that you have been infected, you should see a professional doctor at once and be prepared to openly discuss with him your sexual history. They would be able to recognize Donovanosis through the type of lesions. Tissue samples containing the Donovan should be conducted for precise diagnosis. A test using a special substance can help the pathologist analyze the diseased cells better. The principal system of diagnosis is through biopsy of the sample tissue containing the Donovan bodies. Other advanced methods of diagnosis are by other tests such as culture, PCR or serology, which are not commonly accessible.
This disease can be treated with antibiotics and in general, it can be cured in about 12 weeks. If you notice that after one week the infection starts to subside, you must not interrupt treatment, because it can as well relapse.
Donovanosis is a quite rare disease in developed countries. However, if a sex partner comes from an endemic area the risk of catching this disease may increase.Even if it does not have anything romantic, when it happens to fall in love with a person coming from a country where people are more frequently exposed to Donovanosis, the best solution is to go to the doctor's and have STD tests done, in order to be sure that there is no risk of spreading this disease. Actually, it can be sort of moral duty to do it if you are responsible for other people's health.
