Pediculosis is a lice infestation. Lice are ectoparasites that live at the skin level and draw blood from the human body for food. Human lice are highly transferable and reproduce very fast.
There are two types of pediculosis: the pediculosis of the head - the insects usually live by feeding from the skin of the head, and they are located mostly on the back of the head or behind the ears. It is frequent in children, but adults can also be affected by it, especially if they live in the same house.
The other type of pediculosis is the pubic lice infestation. Lice are found in the pubic area, although in very rare cases, they can also live in the eyebrows, facial hair, chest hair, and scalp.
Body lice stay and lay eggs on clothes and stay only at the skin level when they feed. They suck the blood for food and are thus equipped with blood sucking needlelike mouth. Under certain conditions such as natural disasters or wars, they can be vectors of diseases such as typhoid fever.
The lice can be easily transferred by direct contact. There are three types of Infestations, the kind of which can be established by the type of insect that is causing the infestation. Pubic hair infestation is brought about by the insect named Phtirius Pubis. One can get it through sexual contact and is easily transmittable. Generally just one single exposure can already get a person infected.
The insects and its eggs can live on items such as towels, clothes or sheets which make transfer to other persons easy. Still, a child found with this infection could also be a victim of sexual abuse. Lice are very resilient and easily transferable such that it can also be transmitted by wearing hats of infected individuals.
Usually they cause an allergic reaction and they affect the skin. The insects bite the skin to feed, and their saliva determines allergic reactions and pus. Skin with pus reactions, can appear within two days, or it can wait, depending on the sensitivity of the individual, as well as the infection history.
If the person is allergic to lice bites and its saliva, then the resulting reaction can be insufferable.
In pediculosis of the hair, the lice live on the head hair, their eggs are white, and could be round or oval in shape. They are cemented to the hair shaft by chitin which makes it very hard to remove from the hair and will never fall off by themselves. While still inside the insect, the eggs are brownish but turn to light brown or white once laid.
Pubic lice bites produce rashes or tiny flat lesions, blue-gray in color. The indications can stay on the skin for several months even after the infestation has been cured. It is a possibility that an infected Individual have other sexually transmitted disease as lice infestation is one of the symptoms.
Generally, the lice stay on the clothes rather than on the skin. These insects are very resilient and will not be eradicated by themselves. So it is highly advisable for the infected person to see a specialist for proper treatment.
