Do you want a way to make your home really stand out? Consider installing garage door trim. Not only will your home look brand new, but you can also showcase those lovely garage doors by completing this project. To begin, you will need a measuring tape, miter box, back saw, trim nails, and a hammer.
The first step is obviously to purchase trim. Any home improvement store from the biggies to the mom and pop stores should have it. Once home, the next step is to measure the height and length of the door.
Next, cut the pieces of trim to match the measurements that you just took. Use the miter box to etch 45 degree cuts into each side of the trim, and then one 45 degree cut on the top of each piece. Essentially, you want the corners to square off.
Then, tack all the pieces that have been cut to the door frame by snapping all the cut pieces together. When the pieces have been placed, use the nails to nail all parts around the door frame. This works best if you nail every six inches as you go along.
Finally, fill in the holes that the nails have left with putty, or paint them to match the color of the trim that you have chosen. When all is said and done, you should have a new trim surrounding those garage doors. If you like, you can even paint all of the trim to match the siding of your home.
Even though you trim is a fairly small piece of the home, it carries a lot of impact from a color perspective. It frames the garage door, so painting it in contrast to the rest of the home will highlight it while matching the home color will not.
Repainting trims around any door on your home can really change the look of the structure. This is true for exterior and interior doors. Go bold to create a contrasting look and soft to help blend the doors in more.
Replacing the garage door trim on your home is a simple one day project. Despite the simplicity, it can really make an impact on both the appearance of your home and the insulation of the garage.
