Out of the many tools available for getting the word out about your products and services, email marketing gets a great deal of attention. Should you add it to your arsenal?

To help you decide, consider the criteria below.

1. Your prospects use email.

If a sizable number of your prospects do not use email, you might want to find other methods of communicating with them. If, on the other hand, your target market already makes use of email nad is comfortable with it, email marketing may be an excellent choice for your business.

2. Your product is not an impulse decision.

With exceptions duly noted, in most cases if prospects are willing to invest time to learn more about your product, you should strongly consider email marketing.

3. You can give away a sample, prior version, or "first chapter".

If you can give away a "taste" of your product or service, email marketing can definitely work in conjunction with that. The free item actually serves two purposes. First, it helps encourage the prospect overcome their initial reluctance to supply their email address. Second, it provides the prospect with a risk-free method of getting to know you and your service or product.

Here's a great tip: you can naturally and easily talk about elements of your free item in a number of sequential email messages. If you gave your prospect a free fifteen-page report, you can and should send out at least one email asking if they received the report, and another message summarizing the first section, and so on. Another options is to simply break up the report up and send it out it in bite-size chunks over the next seven, ten, or more days. Why would you do this? Believe it or not, some of the people who download your report will not read it, and for those that do, the content will be reinforced by repitition.

4. You have other products or services to offer.

If that does not describe your business, I suggest you make plans to rectify it immediately. The reason is simple. You have already spent a considerable amount of time and effort to locate interested prospects and persuade them to buy. A certain percentage of them will want to "go deep" and buy more from you, if only you offered something more. The easiest sales you make will be sales to existing customers, and it's not difficult to understand why. They already trust you and want what you are selling.

If you are marketing an information product on how to begin selling on ebay, you may also choose to offer a workbook complete with checklists and other valuable information, a series of teleseminars, a personal coaching program, and perhaps a certification program.

Virtually any type of business, whether you sell to retail consumers or only wholesale, whether you provides services or products only, can make use email marketing.
