There are two simple keys to a successful affiliate business. One is a website which can attract visitors; ideally visitors with something in common. The other key is a product, or perhaps a service of some kind, which will motivate them to request further information or make a purchase.
As an online marketer of any kind, you will need to ask and answer, to the best of your ability, several questions about your visitors. What is their gender? Their age range? Their income? In what are they interested?
Most of all, be sure you understand why people come to your website. What do they think it is going to offer them? What are they hoping to find?
If you do a lot of well organized thinking about who your visitors are, you'll discover what their interests are, what they need, what they think they need (which may be very different), and what they might be willing to buy online. The products or services you choose must be a good match for your audience or it doesn't matter how many folks visit your website. But, don't worry, if the products or services you choose first don't sell well, try others. It's better to be right the first time, but it's not a requirement.
Be sure to consider lead generation programs as well as programs which pay you on a per sale basis. Depending on the content of your site and the demographics of your visitors, they may be more interested in receiving car insurance quotes, for instance, than in buying auto accessories. Some programs pay you very well just to help them identify prospects for whatever it is they sell.
Many website owners make a very nice living giving away products to consumers who, in exchange for freebies, give companies permission to contact them with product offers in the future. If you spend anytime online, you have undoubtedly seen such offers.
Obviously, you want to consider programs which pay high commissions, but your own sales and/or sales leads do not have to be your only source of revenue. Try to find programs which will pay you for attracting other affiliates, particularly two and three tier programs. One program to which I belong pays me 10% of the earnings of everyone I sign up.
Be cautious and selective when choosing an affiliate program. Choose those which:
1. give you ongoing, relevant online statistics. The more data you have, the more likely you will be to make decisions which can increase your traffic and your sales.
2. provide you with tested, successful advertising copy and/or banners.
3. offer you assistance, and/or advice when you need it (not two weeks later).
4. offer a useful product or service of high quality at a price your website visitors can afford.
Offer your visitors a special piece of information, a widget, a newletter or a report using a sign up process in which you'll receive their email addresses and permission to contact them again. That way you can invite them to return to your website whenever you update it and you can offer them products or services via email. But, don't email them too often or they'll soon tire of hearing from you.
Finally, follow the great advice I once got from an extremely successful businessperson. Track and analyze everything that moves.
