12 Step Programs have worked like a virus! That's right, they've become so successful you can travel to nearly any continent and find a 12 step group for your needs. Did you know that 12 step programs have a higher success rate than treatment programs? I'm a professional, who's specialized in addictions for years, but you simply cannot beat how powerful 12 step programs are in your bid for recovery.
What started it all? Well, back in the 1930's two men came together, Bill and Bob. If you're a movie fan watch the movie, "My Name Is Bill W." with James Woods starring as Bill W. This is a great movie about how AA came into existence. Both these men have passed away, but Bill W. lived long enough to see AA spread across the globe.
It may come as a shock to you, but the 12 Step Program has stong roots in Christianity. In fact, you can find every step in the program referenced in the Bible in different places. The AA Big Book today still has many instances to "God" and "The Father." If I recall correctly, one of the spouses of these two men worked in an office associated with the Oxford Group. This connection to the Oxford Group, a Christian organization, would turn out to be powerfully influential in the development of the 12 Step Program of AA.
The early beginnings of 12 step programs centered around The Oxford Group, a religious group that offered a sequenced set of steps that would lead one to a fantastic life.
Todays 12 step programs focus more on it being a a spiritual program rather than a religious one. This has been a great benefit to the addicts considering 12 step programs because so many are turned off to religion today. Although "God" and "Father" are referenced in nearly every meeting, the party line continues to be that this is a spiritual program.
The success of the 12 steps speak itself. Today, all over the world, you can find programs focused on codependency, gambling, sex addiction, spending, overeating and many more than I could list here. This program is free to attend. Is confidential and it's worked for hundreds of thousands to recover from thier addictions.
