As we saw in Part 1 of this article, most affirmations, no matter how compelling or impassioned they may by, usually end up stashed away somewhere gathering dust. It just makes sense that what you focus on and pay attention to is what you will get. If you've studied the Law of Attraction at all or watched the movie, 'The Secret' that is the main theme. So all these people are saying it works, so you make a long list of what you want to have show up in your life. I know I sure did. I wanted my business to grow exponentially, I wanted my marriage to be better, so I wrote all that stuff down and diligently started to say them over and over. For about a week, maybe 2 and then my subconscious would fire back with "Lord this is boring", or "Yada, yada, yada" or something like that and I taper off and eventually stop doing them all together. We learned in Part 1 that there are two main reasons for this:
1. Because we don't really Believe what we are telling ourselves in our affirmations, our subconscious fights back and change doesn't happen instantly, so before the affirmations have a chance to stick, we give up on them. This was covered in Part 1, and
2. We don't know how to pull ourselves out of the downward spiral of negativity caused by the day to day stuff and start thinking good thoughts in real time - like right NOW, so we stop the affirmations.
It's a hard thing, sometimes a really hard thing to turn around negativity in real time. I used to have a saying back before I learned better, and that was - "I've earned this depression and I'm going to wallow in it for awhile." What a ridiculously negative thing to say, but I said it a million times. But the Law of Attraction teaches us that what we think about the most is what we attract into our lives. If you are thinking negative thoughts all the time, stuff to give you more negative thoughts is sure to come your way.
But, when you look at the other side of the coin, the more you can focus on what you want to have in your life, the quicker it will come to you. If you can focus on it with emotion and feeling, well then, so much the better. So it makes sense that the more time you can spend feeling good and keeping the dark clouds at bay, then the easier it would be to bring about your desires.
So knowing that, many gurus tell you that you need to CHANGE the way you think and focus on the positive, but they don't tell you HOW to do that, do they? They might recommend affirmations - we've already seen how that goes - or books to read, or meditations - great idea if you can find quiet time and space RIGHT NOW. All of these methods can help if YOU DO THEM, but it's rare to be in a negative situation that's happening right now and be able to meditate in real time.
What you need in a situation like that is a tool available that would instantly change your negative thoughts into positive ones right in the very NOW that you realize you are having them. Something that you can grab onto without having to really think about it that would be like flipping a switch off an on. Something that's already there, offering you a lifeline.
That seems impossible to most people, because they are so used to floundering in the tailspin that the idea of changing their thoughts in an instant seems crazy. But my suggestion is that you put in some thought, today, right now about how you might handle the next crisis you come up against. Do you want to let it take you down that well worn path to the pit, or do you want to grab onto something and say "NO, NOT THIS TIME, NOT EVER AGAIN!!!" Make a plan, get something stuck in your head, plant a switch there so that the next time you recognize that - "Oh geez, here we go again" - you remember that you have a tool. You need to have something that you don't even really have to think about to use, it just goes on autopilot. Maybe a chant or a little jingle or something that your 'Belief Detective' won't recognize as an affirmation. You don't have to believe the words, it's just a little song.
So the moral is - be prepared. Think about it right now, while you are reading this. Don't wait until the next time that life hands you lemons to wonder why it is happening again and again. Take the bull by the horns and be ready with your own secret weapon. You've been to the Pity Party enough times and there's nothing there for you any more. Be ready!
