Ornithology is one of the greatest pastimes because it enables you to meet like minded people, watch and learn about birds, know their species, while spending some quality time in the country.

If you know someone who is into this, you could surprise them on their birthday by buying something that matches his interest. First know what things ornithologists carry with them while they go to the woods to watch birds; then you'll know what type of bird watching gifts are likely to be appreciated.

Perhaps if you give the person a hat, that would be a present that doesn't cost the earth. This gift would act to prevent sunburn and help them improve their vision.

Another very useful gift is a pair of cargo trousers with multiple pockets which allow them to carry snacks and other necessary bits and pieces.

A bird watching vest is another item which has more areas to store items than a pair of combat pants. They can put their cell phone on one pocket, snacks, water, map, and insect repellent and more on the others making it within arm's length rather than taking this out of the back pack.

Just in case they need a new back pack as the old one is worn out, you could also gift them one. Backpacks come in several sizes and you don't require a large one because these people travel light.

The most costly gift idea for a bird enthusiast is a pair of binoculars. Quality binoculars are costly because of the optics involved which allow the bird watcher to see the birds from a distance with great clarity. You can get plenty of features in binoculars; expensive versions allow lenses to be interchanged and some can be used to take pictures and videos even.

Ornithologists normally document what varieties of birds they've found, in what numbers and particularly where they were seen; so a good gift idea could be a bird watching journal.

If none of these ideas work for you, have you ever thought of buying an ornithologist a one year subscription to a bird watching periodical? These are beautiful magazines published monthly (or quarter) and bear information and pictures of birds which live in remote and exotic places.

If you are cash rich, you could think of sending the person to a bird watching vacation to another part of the Americas, North or South. There are thousands of bird species and whilst there is a huge diversity of species in the US, many have not made their home there.

So what should you buy and what would be most preferred gift? To know this you have to discuss with the recipient as to what his needs are. A chat can reveal a great deal and you would get plenty of ideas; you can then choose a gift which is within your budget yet would make the person happy.

Who knows? It's possible that during the course of your shopping, you might learn to appreciate bird watching yourself. Rather than admiring such people, you would soon be joining their group.
