Commercial dog food - so many varieties to choose from and really no idea what I am buying. Does that sound familiar. Dog food labelling has got to be one of the most confusing things I have ever come accross.

The issue is there are just loads of brands to chose from. Where do you start when faced with complete information overload. It would help if we could actually make sense of the labelling and have some idea of what we were feeding our dog. Do we really know what we are feeding our dog?

It will shock you to realise that the majority of dog owners do not realise what their dog is eating. As consumers we have been brainwashed by the pet-food industry to believe all their marketing claims. Your dogs food may seem like the perfect, balanced solution but unfortunately this is not the case.

Below are a few things to think about the next time you purchase your dogs food.

Dog food is full of preservatives, byproducts and other "suspicious" ingredients

Dog food is packed with dead animals, blood, bones, head and feet and drugs used to euthanize sick animals can still be present in your dogs food after manufacturing.

A large number of dog food companies state their products contain "human grade ingredients". This is not true.

A variety of diseases in dogs have been associated with commercial dog food and their ingredients.

We all want what is best for our dog so please remember the petfood industry is extremely profitable ($25 billion per annum worldwide). They use state of the art advertising which will not enable you to make an informed decision regarding your dogs diet. You must step back from the hype and learn what is really in your dogs bowl.

I have owned dogs for many years and for most of this time was completely ignorant to what was in the "premium" brand dog foods. It was only after my "newfie" died and her death was linked to her diet that I really began to research what actually goes into commercial dog food.
