Shih Tzu dogs have a lot of behaviors that are found only in their breed and sometimes that is a good thing and sometimes that is not such a good thing. Before you invest in a Shih Tzu dog, and bring one home with you, you may want to look up their typical behavior and see if they are the right kind of dog for you and your family.
Shih Tzu dogs do not react well to loud noises, sudden noises, and a lot of commotion and rattling about. They are very high-strung dogs and one of their natural reactions to a lot of noise and commotion is an unpleasant biting response. For this reason you may want to talk it over with your breeder to decide if a Shih Tzu is a good dog to mix with your kids. It is better to find these things out before you bring the dog home especially if you discover that the Shih Tzu and your kids are not compatible.
Shih Tzu dogs descend from the dogs that were preferred by Chinese royalty and it seems that every generation since the original generation knows that and acts like it. They carry themselves very well, they are very dignified little dogs, but they are also playful and happy dogs when they feel comfortable and at ease. They do not require a lot of exercise but when they get going they certainly do love to play.
A Shih Tzu may look like your typical little yip dog but in reality the Shih Tzu is not nearly as vocal and as annoying as many other breed of toy dogs are.
But they do snort a lot during the regular course of the day and they snore when they sleep so be ready for that. So if you want a toy breed that does not make a lot of barking noise the Shih Tzu may be for you.
A Shih Tzu dog is not like a Labrador or some other very easy to train breed of dog. They won't go fetch the ball if they don't feel like it and that simply isn't going to change. They can be very stubborn and it can take you a long time to get them to realize who is in charge because they think they are. This also causes problems with housebreaking because sometimes housebreaking a Shih Tzu can take almost six months depending on the dog.
Some people love Shih Tzu dogs because they require, and thrive on, a lot of attention. They need constant brushing for their long beautiful coat but mostly they just hate being left alone.
They also do not like being left alone for more than a few hours at a time so be sure you are going to be able to spend a lot of time with your Shih Tzu. If you keep this in mind then you will be able to really enjoy your dog.
