You don't need expensive camera equipment to take great pictures of your German Shepherd. Technology has advanced and digital camera prices have dropped so much that you can take high quality pictures of your German Shepherd with a reasonably priced camera phone or digital camera.

Before you involve your German Shepherd in the process, get out all the cameras you intend to use. Check their memory cards and make sure you are using high capacity memory cards. Load fresh batteries in each camera and have several sets of unused replacement batteries nearby. Select the area where you will take your pictures, and gather any backdrops or props you want to use.

Taking digital photographs saves you money over traditional prints from film. With digital photography, you only pay for the pictures that turn out. Blurry shots, overexposed frames, red eyes and other shots where your German Shepherd doesn't look his best disappear into the trash can with a click.

Tip number two is getting some help. Once you pick up the camera, you literally have your hands full. You need an extra person on site to help pose your dog, brush its hair, keep it looking alert, feed it treats and act as your staging assistant while you take pictures.

Photographing a pet can be full of problems. You have to get the dog to sit still and pose, and your dog probably doesn't understand your direction beyond the commands to sit and stay. There are lighting and backdrop issues to deal with, and you need to be sure you're shooting at the right level. Don't worry. I'm going to give you five great tips that will deal with all these problems and get you started taking fabulous pictures of your German Shepherd.

Tip number three is to plan your background. Select an area for your German Shepherd pictures. If you're taking pictures outside, you will find that the deep tan coat of the German Shepherd looks particularly good against green grass and a blue sky. With that in mind, you may want to use blue or green fabric as a backdrop if you are taking your pictures indoors.

Tip number four is to use dog toys and other visual objects to add interest. Props are a must when you're photographing a German Shepherd puppy, and they add detail to pictures of older dogs. Place one brightly colored object with a simple design near your dog, grab your camera and wait for the perfect shot.

Tip number five is to get down to your dog's level. The best dog pictures are taken at the dog's eye level. Don't be afraid to get down on the floor with your dog and take pictures. If you've been taking pictures standing up, you'll be amazed at the difference. Follow this simple advice, and soon you'll be taking amazing pictures of your German Shepherd.
