The only difference between the Shar Pei and the Mini Shar Pei is the size. The Mini Shar Pei can only be seventeen inches tall. Otherwise, the Mini Shar Pei is basically a miniature version of the Shar Pei. He is a wrinkle ball as a puppy growing into a sturdy, muscular Mini Shar Pei. He is a solid color of fawn, brown, red or black. His coat can be either soft or harsh but never wavy or thick.

Mini Shar Peis can only be a solid color with a bluish or black tongue. The colors range from red, fawn, black and brown. The puppies are completely wrinkled with the adults taking the brunt of the wrinkles in the face and neck area while only some wrinkling will be on the body. There are some Mini Shar Peis that are tight skinned, with only wrinkles on the face.

The basic difference between the standard Shar Pei is that the Mini Shar Pei can only be seventeen inches tall. They are a solid color with a black or bluish tongue. Their coat colors can be black, brown, red or fawn and they have a very wrinkled face. All Shar Pei puppies are wrinkle puppies. They are one of the cutest of breed puppies. They have a short tail, which comes above its back and ends in a tight curl. They can have either a brush coat or a horse coat with the hair no longer than one inch on the back. The texture of the coat can be harsh to soft, but never long and wavy or excessively thick.

The Shar Pei is short and broad and square in proportion of his body length to his height. The most noticeable characteristic is the tight wrinkling around his face. The Shar Pei was originally bred in China as a fighting dog. They still carry to this day a suspicion of strangers and will always bark at a new face. They are naturally independent and reserved and are fiercely loyal to their owners and family.

They make great family pets because of the love they have for their family. Shar Peis need to be socialized early or they will become easily aggressive with strangers. This is a throwback to their ancestors who worked as guard dogs. Even though these dogs are small they are very powerful when it comes to defending their own family from newcomers. But a Mini Shar Pei is very affectionate and friendly towards his family and can become very comical with them.

The Chinese royal family's ancestry once used these dogs as their official guard dogs. The word for Shar Pei is sand coat. This refers to their coarse coat. The coarse coat makes a natural defense for the Mini Shar Pei. The wrinkles make the dogs hard to grab and will allow the dog time to turn around and bite.

Their eyes and ears are very small which makes them hard to grab as well. They gained a nickname as the Golden Lions. Eventually, the Shar Pei and Mini Shar Pei were the rarest breed on the planet.

They make loveable and playful pets and some wonder if they weren't first bred as companion dogs instead of fighting dogs. The Mini Shar Pei is now one of the most popular dogs of all time. The puppies that grow into their skin are definitely one of a kind.
