One of the most beautiful and scenic national parks in the United States is Yellowstone which has acreage in three different states; Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. It totals 2.2 million acres of land and many species of birds and other wildlife are among its inhabitants. This prime wilderness area has over 1,100 miles of hiking trails to tempt those who love hiking.
Even with trails that are simple to reach and well-groomed, and you have park rangers watching over you, you still have to be aware of weather that can change in an instant, rocks that may roll and hurt you, and unpredictable animals. It's imperative that you respect the "wilderness" and follow the park's rules. Knowing about the potential risks and sticking to the guidelines, should have you all set to face any situation you might encounter in the park.
Day hikes are among the favorite things to do when you visit Yellowstone. You will have your pick of hiking trails, and can easily find one that will fit your level of expertise and endurance. On your way out, visit the park rangers where you can get a map and information about the trails. They will help you choose a trail as well as reminding you to watch for bears, sudden storms, and possible fires. You should automatically take a first aid kit, sunscreen, rain gear, and bug repellant anytime you hike.
For Yellowstone Park, you do not need a permit for hiking although some parks do have this requirement. As you meander among the trails, you will find yourself going into remote sections of the park. Some of the trails are smooth and easy, offering gentle terrain. However, you will also come across trails that require hiking skill and endurance. Therefore, always check the trail conditions before starting out and choose trails that match your hiking ability.
Most importantly, bring your camera along and take tons of pictures. This part of the country is truly breathtaking and the overall experience of hiking through valleys, fields of flowers, and over small passes while seeing all the beautiful wildlife is something you will never forget.
