Specific ingredients are what make a great meal and the same idea applies to a successful football team. One may say that all you need is talented players, but this is a myth that has been busted in recent years and this article explores the issue.
There's no doubt that talent is something any team needs to become successful. It seems perfectly logical that being more talented than the opposing team is going to play into your hands.
That said, the implication is that a rich football club can just purchase 11 of the world's best players and sweep every league and tournament in front of them. Some clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea have attempted to do just that in recent times.
Contrary to their expectations, the titles did not flow in, and in fact many of them struggled in their own domestic league and disappointed in European tournaments.
Why did they struggle despite their talent? Did they have the ingredients to make a great football team? Obviously they did not. Which begs the questions, what else is needed apart from talent? My answer to that question is that you need an ego balance.
The main drawback about attracting a talented group of players is the amount of egos that arrive with them. Most managers find it extremely difficult to keep everyone in check and as a result, the team suffers.
There have been occasions where such teams have gone on to win some trophies but overall they are not considered successful. A large number of egos in a team means that bench players are not too pleased and this creates tension within player ranks.
The best football teams ever to play the game had few egos to worry about. They were all mainly built around one or two main players, who also acted as inspirational leaders for the team.
We only have to look at what Maradona did in a very average Argentinean team in Mexico 1986 to see how this is true. In addition, there is the successful Barcelona team of recent years, led by 2 of the world's best players in Ronaldinho and Deco.
In the past season, Barcelona ruined their great form by acquiring another big ego in the form of Thierry Henry and it's no surprise that the team's performance has dipped, not to mention tensions brewing between players. Both Deco and Ronaldinho wanting out comes as no surprise.
The main lesson to be learned is that a great football team is not just about talent but about the amount of egos in a team. 'Galactico' teams have never worked, even if it's tempting for cashed up teams. The idea that a team of champions does not make a champion team cannot be truer.
