Below is a list of some of the jargon you will hear at the poker tables. If you don't know what these things mean, you will feel like a rookie at the tables. This is just a short list of a few of the things you might hear.

The Bubble- In tournament poker there always is a point where prizes start to be awarded. When you reach the point where the next player eliminated means everyone will cash in the event, you are on the bubble.

The Board- In Texas holdem games there are community cards turned up in the middle of the table. These cards can are often referred to as the board. You might hear someone say " I can't call you with that board out there".

Call- When a player calls a bet, he only matches the most recent bet made into the pot. Example, my opponent raises to $300, to stay in the hand I must call, or raise. To call, I need to put $300 into the pot.

Check- When a player elects not to make a bet in his turn. He checks, waiting to see if other players bet. If a bet is made later, he will have the choice to call, or make a raise, when his turn comes again.

Counterfeited- Although not the only example, being counterfeited usually occurs when your small pair runs into higher pairs appearing on the board. Another counterfeit situation is when you have 2 pair and are beaten by the top pair when the river pairs the board.

Dead Money- Dead money signifies weak players at a tournament, who have virtually no chance of winning. "There's a lot of dead money at the WSOP events".

On The Draw- When a player is staying in the pot hoping to catch a card or cards to beat his opponent, he is on the draw. Typical hands to be on the draw with are 4 cards to a flush, or an open ended straight draw.

Fast Play- When you fast play a hand, you are very aggressive. You bet and raise large amounts, putting the pressure on your opponent.

Fold Equity- This term signifies the additional value you have in a hand when you raise your opponent. This value represents the possibility that your opponent will fold and give you the pot uncontested.

Free Roll- A free roll is a unique situation that occurs occasionally in an all-in situation. An example would be: both players are all in with the following hands and board KdQd KclQcl with a board of 8sp 9d 10d. The first player can't lose, but is on a free roll, and will win if a diamond hit on the turn or river.

Live Cards- When the two cards in your hand don't match those of your opponents. Let's say you pushed all-in with J9 and were called by AK. You might say "at least I've got 2 live cards".

Limp- When you just call the big blind, you are limping into the pot. It is typically only used to describe calling the big blind pre flop.

Muck- When you get rid of your hand without showing it, you muck it. When you call your opponent on the river and he shows the winner, you can just muck your hand, not showing anyone.

Nuts- When can't be beaten, you have the nuts. The nuts are the best hand available with the board in front of you.
