For an adventure type sport scuba diving is relatively safe providing one sticks to a standard set of regulations and rules. It's only when these are broken do we find people putting themselves, and potentially others, in danger.

Let's start off by looking at the main errors that folks tend to make that change a safe situation into a potentially dangerous one. By doing this I hope that we can then put scuba diving into some sort of perspective and change any misguided perception that this is a dangerous sport.

Failure To Obtain Standard Certification.

In most regulated places you will not be able to rent scuba equipment unless you provide some evidence that you have aquired a level of diver certification. This can be beginner, intermediate or, of course, advanced status. Sadly a dangerous way round this is to get someone renting gear who is certified and then passing it over to someone who isn't.

Since the explosion if internet auction sites this has become even more widespread. This is a sad, irresponsible and potentially dangerous scenario because scuba diving requires specific skills and knowledge and if the activity does not have a framework that regulates inappropriate activity we will see serious accidents and even a catastrophe.

Diving With Very Few Skill Sets.

Certain dives require specialized skills because they are extremely dangerous to an untrained person. Ice diving, cavern diving, shark diving and wreck penetration diving MUST be performed by someone who has been specifically trained in these areas.

If you are going to try these types of dives without the neccessary skills you are putting your life on the line. A small amount of money and time spent on a specialist course could save your life.

The Danger of Scuba Diving And Alcohol.

The vast majority of scuba diving enthusiasts are responsible and dive in a safe manner however there is a small minority who completely ignore some basic rules of safety and diving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of them.

It goes without saying that this is as dangerous as it gets and has, in the past, led to some deaths. It is paramount that no diver enters the open water whilst under the influence of either drug.

Inappropriate Levels Of Conditioning And Diving.

It is something that can be quite difficult to talk about but mishaps and fatalities sometimes happen because the people involved are morbidly obese or who smoke and are also morbidly obese. Statistically people in this category can suffer cardiac arrests whilst diving.

All the issues we have mentioned can be addressed and therefore the danger levels can be reduced significantly. It is down to each individual to recognize them and act accordingly.
