With rugged escarpments and clear azure water, Greece has a splendor like no other country. Western culture has long been influenced by the civilization of Greece. It really is no wonder that over sixteen million people visit Greece each year. With tourist activities and sites offered in sports, nightlife, and history, experiences in Greece teem. For visitors to Greece, I have compiled some helpful information.

Officially known as the Hellenic Republic, Greece gets that name from the time of mythological Helen. A map of Greece would display the fact that Greece is encompassed by the Mediterranean and the Aegean Seas. The ancient country of Greece is located in southeast Europe. Loaded with culture and history, Greece is the pinnacle of tourism. Democracy, philosophy, and theater have their beginnings rooted in Greece.

The capital and biggest city of Greece is Athens, a city with a well-known place in history, as well as a recent host to the Olympic Games. When traveling to Greece, note that they use Euros. Places that are less well known may also be less equipped to handle ATM needs, as many places have an "old world" atmosphere, so keep that in mind before leaving the more tourist-oriented areas.

Greece does have many islands, in addition to the mainland. Summer is a good season to visit the many beautiful beaches on the mainland or on the islands. For travel between islands, use the ferry system. Winter, too, can be fun in Greece. The mainland offers great skiing in winter. No matter what the time of year is when you visit, you will find many things to occupy your time.

Greece is very well known for food. To enjoy a real experience of Greece, you must try some of the traditional dishes. Stifado, Greek salad, and spanakopita are some of the most popular Greek meals. The most popular, Souvlaki, a form of shish kebab, is made of meat and once-in-a- while, vegetables grilled on a stick, though a gyro is sometimes known as souvlaki. Pantespani, a sponge cake with orange-flavored syrup, is one of the best known Greek desserts. Not eating the food is not an option in Greece!

There is no limit to the activities you can do while in Greece. Ranked number eight in the world, the Greek national football team is a sure bet for fun. If football is your thing, you can also check out the Greek Super league. Made up of sixteen teams, this is the professional league of football in Greece. If football, or soccer, is an interest, get tickets to a match!

If history is one of your interests, Greece will be your heaven! Many aspects of Western culture stem from Greek ancient history. Sites related to these cultural beginnings can be found throughout Greece. Places like the Acropolis and the Parthenon will awe and inspire visions of the past. The palaces that house amazing frescoes on the island of Crete are notable as well.

Home to so many activities and sites of interest, it seems natural that Greece has a booming tourist industry. However, aside from the traditional tourist locations, Greece offers some off-the-beaten-path sites as well. With "old world" charm, Greece never fails to excite the tourists who visit.
