Searching for the perfect Father's Day gift? Instead of buying him a new set of barbecue tools or his fifth electric drill, step outside the box and treat Dad to a special weekend getaway at a bed and breakfast. Here is a list of great inns that will make Dad feel like a king.

A Father's Day Trip Back in Time

If Dad is a history buff, then a stay at the Portobello Inn Bed & Breakfast is a must. Located in Herkimer N. Y., this 1840s Italianate mansion is resplendent with colonial charm and elegance. The rooms are tastefully decorated with classic furniture, the wraparound veranda looks out on hillsides that will remind you of Tuscany, and the property even has the original 1760 homestead still on sight! This is a place where Dad (and Mom) can truly unwind and relax.

Calling All Cowboys

Is Dad a Wild West fan with a taste for the supernatural? Then take this closet cowboy to the 1859 Historic National Hotel in Jamestown, Calif. Opened in 1859 in California's Gold Country, the National Hotel has been in operation continuously since then. During all those years a lot of gold dust has crossed this B&B's original redwood bar. Legalized prostitution was conducted here until 1930, and the site had a casino until 1949.

Today, you'll find the National Hotel lovingly restored to its original glory. There's a water-filled gold mine shaft in the back garden, and the hotel is said to be haunted by Flo, the friendly ghost. Flo generally stays upstairs in the hotel, seemingly favoring the rooms in the front of the building although she has, on occasion, been seen early in the morning downstairs, floating through the dining room and right through the walls," says the National Hotel's website. "Notebooks in guest rooms are filled with numerous accounts of doors slamming, lights going on and off, clothing being dumped from suitcases, and a woman's crying in the middle of the night."

Who Says Dads Don't Enjoy Romance?

North Carolina's Outer Banks are one of the great tourist secrets of this age. Its wonderful white sands and warm Atlantic waters make it a perfect Father's Day getaway. For bed-and-breakfast lovers, The White Doe Inn in Manteo is worthy of a visit. Listed in the National Register, this 1910 white mansion features in-room spa service, chocolate dipped strawberries and champagne, beautiful period rooms with gas fireplaces, and the beach just a few minutes' walk away. The White Doe Inn is so romantic, in fact, that Dad and Mom might rediscover a passion that they thought had slipped away. On second thought, let's not go into that, shall we?

Get Dad Back to Nature

With its close access to more than 200 lakes, as well as hundreds of miles of the Muskegon River, La Belle de la Riviere is a perfect spot for Dad to enjoy a getaway of hunting, fishing and kayaking. Those activities are just the tip of the iceberg at this historic Newaygo, Michigan bed and breakfast. Canoeing, hiking, biking and golf are among the other fun options. The restored 1871 mansion features period Victorian dcor in the romantic guest rooms, so bring Mom along. After a gourmet French breakfast, guests can enjoy a walk along the river or stroll through the town's historic district. Whatever the choice, this is one vacation Dad will never forget.
