Summer is a great time for USA visitors & tourists to plan a road vacation. You may be taking a short weekend trip or an entire month off. To be safe and comfortable you must follow some basic tips.
1. Check your tires and tire pressure often. An average US tire loses about a pound of air pressure each month. Proper tire inflation is absolutely essential to maintain proper contact between the tire and the road and to avoid blowouts. Most cars have information in the driver door jamb that lists the correct tire pressures depending on tire size and vehicle load. Properly inflated tires will also improve fuel economy and save you frequent trips to the gas station. Make sure your spare tire is also ready to use.
2. Schedule an oil change before your trip. Warm weather may require thicker oil. Pay attention to the coolant/antifreeze ratio, it should be around 50/50.
3. If needed top off all the fluids and examine the belts and hoses for cracks and wear. If your battery is between 3-5 years old get it tested. It can be strained in hot weather and it is safer to replace it than be stranded in the middle of nowhere.
4. Get a membership to an Auto club like AAA if possible. Have their numbers handy in case you are stuck on the road and need assistance. Some car manufacturers include this service on their cars. Check to see if your car is covered under such a plan.
5. Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle. Stock it with basic tools you may need, food, water, food supplies and a first aid kit. You can buy pre assembled kits in an auto store.
6. A small cooler packed with food and drinks can be very handy especially if you are travelling with kids. Keep it stocked and replenish it at gas stations along the way. Avoid salty snacks and sodas, they can dehydrate you.
7. Do not drive if you are sleepy or tired. Take frequent rest stops to stretch and refresh yourself. Always wear your seat belt and strap children in approved car seats.
An investment in a trusted visitor health can cover you for medical expenses from illnesses or injuries. Have a great summer vacation!
