How to Find Your Type

Of course, my type is someone who is smart, funny, and cute. But who doesn't have that type? I always struggle with this question.

For those that are looking for a serious mate, then you should decide what it is that will make you happy long term. Here are some ways to get you there.

Take a personality test. A quick online search will turn up dozens of tests including the Myers-Briggs personality test. Now most of these tests are geared toward career options, but any analysis of yourself will help you identify your own traits. This will no doubt offer an insight into what makes you tick.

Make a list of your ex's positive traits. Don't relive your past relationship traumas and self-destruct. But do learn from your experiences. Seek out qualities of a person that you know, based on your history, will work.

Find your fantasy love affair. AOL Personals has taken some of its members' profiles and categorized them by celebs they are similar to. If you like Matthew McConaughey, Patrick Dempsey, or Katie Holmes, for example, try it out just for fun.

Values. Values. Values. A shared value system is the key in any long-lasting relationship. Your fundamental beliefs and priorities in life shouldn't be compromised by your partner. Identify the values that matter most to you, for example, a career, children, faith, and geography. Only accept a second date with someone who shares your values with you.

Shop around. Online dating sites are a gift for the picky single. Visit a few dating sites like Match, EliteMate, or Singlesnet.com and just browse. It's likely there are certain qualities you will like about someone that you hadn't thought about before. Who knows, maybe you'll decide to join a dating site and meet him or her for real.

These suggestions will hopefully guide you in the right direction, but keep an open mind on your type and who you date. You never know who might surprise you and turn out to be your type after all.
