Russian families have been becoming more liberal day by day when it comes to blessing on the wedding day. Before it was compulsory that the couple do get permission from their parents but now it no longer is the same. Even though the tradition has been changing, there are a few that you need to stick to.

A Russian marriage is a very unique experience. No matter how you meet your Russian bride, whether it is on the street or through a marriage agency, there are some basic things that you need to learn about Russian cultures.

Earlier in Russia the groom and the bride would be promised to one another at a very young age. They would try to find out more about each other during their wedding. It was the parents and the rest of the family who decided on the bride and the groom and not the young woman or the man.

The Russian system of promised marriages began changing in the nineteen sixties. Dating was allowed during this time, but any sexual contact before the wedding was forbidden and severe punishments were given if they found out.

It was the right of a man to visit the bride's family to know about her prior to marriage. If the father expressed his consent, the woman had to win bread for her future in laws. This proved her ability in being a good and modest wife.

Purchasing a bride was in no way an offense. It is practiced even today. It is however being considered a tradition than an act of trade. Bidding on a woman is done by the man. He offers as much as money and presents that he can to her family. Practices such as this were just done to show that the man will be able to support the woman. A good life after the marriage and no greed was the bottom line of this act.

If the bride's family is against the marriage in any way it didn't mean that it was impossible for her to get married, but it was more of a challenge. There was a solution that is a tradition called "Stealing". Today it might sound funny to some, but as of a century ago stealing girls was considered a profession. Young men worked out all the plans to trick the family members who were refusing to allow the marriage.

Men were helped by their family and friends circle. This could happen only with his fullest co-operation of the bride. In the mid night, she would escape with her man of love, showing the rebellious nature of Russian women. They are ready to leave all that they cherished, behind, their parents and also when it is love and affection that is considered.

Besides getting formal papers signed the traditional form of Russian marriages also included taking promises in front of the almighty. They wanted their religion and marriage to mean something to them. They also wanted to assert that they had not got married merely for legal purposes.

Half an hour was required for the ceremonies if they were done in the orthodox way. They possibly went on for about four hours if it included chants and traditional acts. The modern couples do prefer the short ceremonies instead of the long ones. Once the ceremony is done, the whole lot of people make a move to a family house or a restaurant and indulge in happiness, drinking and delicious meals.
