Craigslist was started by it's founder Craig Newmark to help cover local happenings on the same lines as the Well and Usenet which were helping people to come together to help each other in a friendly way over the internet. Craigslist is a non profit making business which aims at helping new nonprofit leaders to come up, get recognized, gain popularity, develop skills to get long lasting success and get connected with people in the same line of business.

Craigslist made its debut in early 1995. Most of the early postings were made by Newmark, and were advertisements of social happenings of interest to software and Internet developers who lived and worked in San Francisco. They saw quick success thanks to word of mouth, and the number of postings and subscribers grew fast.

The classified advertisement section includes personal ads, erotic services, community announcements, selling / buying advertisements in traditional style. Initial services were offered in the beginning of the year 1995. Though there were certain limitations in technology successful mailing operations were resumed in the month of June 1995.

The postings and contributions grew in number with an increase of subscribers which became popular by word of mouth. The list of categories grew with the demand of the users. "Jobs" category was created when it was found that employers used the listing which provided technically skilled candidates to them.

This domain was named "craiglist.org" which was later changed to craiglist.com to stop this name from being used for other reasons. He decided to keep this website non-commercial after being approached for running banner-ads.

Craigslist and New York foundation is a non - profitable organization under section 501(c) 3. Certain events are produced through online basis with a view to help the emerging leaders. The main objective of Craigslist is to gain adequate visibility and establishment, to develop the necessary skills and knowledge needed for long term success and to connect the people with industry resources. They neither offer fund nor involve in promoting the individual organizations.
