The Importance of Goal Setting
The most successful people in the world are driven. They drive themselves and do not need to be told what to do. The power in this is that they only do one thing different than most people.
They envision what they want out of life and they set themselves out to achieve it. This is done simply by identifying what it is that you want. Once identified, they make the "to do list" a priority.
The key is to not make the list of goals too large. It's easy to get sidetracked and very easy to feel overwhelmed. Instead of trying to conquer the world overnight, why not take care of the small things first.
When you accomplish your first verbalized or written goal, you will start to feel a sense of self worth. This will provide the strength to go out and set your next goal. It really can take off like wildfire, but you need to build the foundation first.
Let's talk about weight loss. If you are so overweight you can barely walk, then you need to make a change. The first thing to realize is that you did not become overweight overnight.
If the goal is to difficult, you will fizzle out. Instead, consider making a goal of just swimming ten laps. Once accomplished, you may be able to set a new goal of twenty laps for the next day.
Within a few weeks, you may realistically be up to one hundred laps in a day. Now, you can maintain that for a long time to come. This is how you take a mid term goal and accomplish it over time through short term many goals.
Whatever you do, try to schedule the specific day that you are going to accomplish your goal. If the goal is time sensitive, but too broad, you may find yourself procrastinating. Don't think about it too much either.
Writing the goal down can bring success. It can help get your Lazy butt off the couch. Don't think about it too much, or you'll probably procrastinate.
Once you get the feeling and sense of accomplishment that comes with goal setting, you can move them up a notch. You might allow three months to accomplish a mid term goal. With other goals, you may want to put them on the five year plan.
Every person who does something wonderful usually had a game plan before they broke through. Hindsight is 20/20. One day you might look back and realize how that one goal turned into a bunch of others that kept leading to bigger and better things.
