How Coral Calcium Products Are Made

Coral calcium can be found in the coral reefs located off the coast of Brazil and Okinawa, Japan. Coral calcium can either be harvested from the land or from the ocean floor at the foot of the coral reefs and what goes into your supplements is the natural material taken from either of these places.

Several coral reefs of the islands of Okinawa grow sideways and are of volcanic origin. Uniquely, coral reefs near underwater volcanoes grow sideways to cover the pits made by volcanoes in the seabed. Marine coral sand or calcium is produced through disintegration and erosion of the reefs over many years. The coral calcium products are made with this sand. This is a natural process which can be caused by the movement of the waves over the reefs; by certain types of fish that like to munch on the coral; or even by droppings and breakage from the natural aging of the coral.

Conserving the living reef is of utmost concern. Okinawa permits and oversees collection of excess sand the reef sheds by three companies that remove it carefully, removing only the extra that accumulates. Clearing away the buildup actually improves conditions for the coral.

In this process, the coral reef isn't harmed at all; in fact, the process can improve and revive dying sections of reef. The devices that harvest coral, called suction dredges, work by a gentle suction on the sand at the ocean floor. Coral reefs are actually a few miles away from the place where the harvesting is taking place. In the interests of protecting the environment, the deep trenches dug for harvesting are fenced off.

Unlike many supplements, coral calcium products are natural and making them actually improves the environment instead of harming it. The ways in which coral calcium is harvested from the floor of the ocean do not endanger the coral reef ecosystem in any way.
